When I joined Eximo, one of the first things I noticed was the strong relationship and immense respect between the CrossFit Community and the United States military. I grew up in a house with a Vietnam veteran so this respect felt familiar – like home.
CrossFit is known for having Hero WODs (Workout of the Day) designed to honor specific military members. However, Veteran’s day is special. Veteran’s day honors all military veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces.
A special day deserves a special WOD, so in honor of all our Veterans, Eximo members did the 21 Guns WOD.
21 Guns
AMRAP (As Many Rounds as Possible) in 21 minutes
- 400 meter run
- 21 push ups
- 21 box jumps (24” box for men/20” box for women)
- 15 burpees
- 9 pull ups
This 21-minute workout and the 21 repetitions within the workout signify a 21-Gun salute – the US’s highest display of honor, typically reserved for fallen troops on Memorial Day. The salute on Veteran’s day is to show our respect and appreciation for all of our Nation’s Warriors, past, present, and future. The five movements in the 21-Guns WOD represent the five branches of the US military.
I have a few veterans and service members in my life that have shaped the way I see the world. My friend Jill, a nurse in the Air Force. My Aunt Karry and Uncle Mike, both Army veterans. And my favorite veteran, my dad, Jack, a Vietnam Navy Veteran.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for your service. The world is a better place with you in it.
